Capturing and Publishing Your Story with Vasculitis:  A Conversation with Kris Kelbrants and Sherry Shuss

Kris Kelbrants holding a copy of her book detailing her experience with CNS vasculitis.

Have you ever thought about writing a book about your personal story with vasculitis?
If so, you probably asked yourself a lot of questions that may have dampened your enthusiasm.  How do I get started capturing and organizing all the details?  What do I include or leave out of the book?  How in the world do I self-publish without spending a fortune?

Unquestionably, publishing a book is challenging, but Kris Kelbrants and Sherry Shuss are co-authors who made it happen.  They’re not only co-authors but also mother and daughter.

Maze of Thorns details Kris’ harrowing and powerful journey with Central Nervous System  (CNS) drawn primarily from a journal that Sherry kept during her daughter’s recovery.

It’s been a long journey to finish writing this book.  It was difficult for my mother to relive a time when she almost lost me.  It was difficult for me to deal with my illness head on after 20 years of avoidance.  The amazing gift I received with this newfound acceptance is I now feel empowered to take charge of my health and be a guiding light for others.

My favorite part of this interview is the last line which is so true for both my mother and I.

Interviewer, Ed Becker: “What is important in terms of the book’s impact on readers?

Kris: “We never set out to sell millions of copies or make a lot of money from our book. From the beginning our hope is that our story will help other patients and their families dealing with this disease. ”

So true.

If you know someone dealing with Vasculitis, the Vasculitis Foundation is an incredible resource where I’ve also found my “family of fighters”.  I’d encourage you to look into it or of course, feel free to contact me, I’d love to help in any way I can!  The Vasculitis Foundation also has a great Facebook Forum.

I’m excited to be more involved with raising awareness about Vasculitis so we one day find the root cause and a cure.

Much love to all families dealing with their own illness or that of a family member or friend, our love prayers are with you.

Love and Light,

Kris and Sherry (Mother/Daughter co-authors of “Maze of Thorns”)
